Why every grinder needs its own number
A grind setting is a position on one grinder's dial, not a size. "15" on a Baratza Encore, 15 clicks on a Comandante and 15 on a 1Zpresso JX-Pro are three different things, because each grinder's burrs, steps and zero point differ. So the calibrator never converts one grinder's number into another's. It shows what each maker publishes for its own grinder, in that grinder's unit.
Some makers print one setting per method; others print a range. Where there's only a range, the tool shows the band on the dial and doesn't invent a single number inside it.
A starting point, then taste
Makers present these as starting points, and the coffee decides the rest: the beans, the roast, how fresh they are and your recipe all move the right setting. Brew at the starting setting, taste, then move in small steps. Sour or thin usually means go finer; bitter or harsh usually means go coarser. Fix My Coffee helps you tell which, and the Grind Guide shows what the grounds should look like.
Where zero is
Hand grinders count clicks or numbers from a zero point, and makers define zero differently: some count from where the handle starts to turn with resistance, others from where the burrs just touch. The calibrator shows each maker's own definition under "Where zero is". If your count starts somewhere else, the published settings will be off by that difference. A few makers also say how far one click moves the burrs (12.5 µm on a JX-Pro, for example). That is the burr movement, not the size of the grounds.
The grinders
21 grinders, from the makers' own charts and manuals, checked on October 15, 2026. For the DF64 Gen 2 and Eureka Mignon Specialità, no maker chart could be found, so the settings come from a documented secondary source and are labelled that way. Not included yet: Timemore Chestnut C3 (standard, not ESP/ESP Pro/Pro), because no maker chart for that exact model could be verified.
